The CHI Brass Jacobs 1 Tuba Mouthpiece is a faithful U.S.-made reproduction of the first Helleberg-style mouthpiece ever purchased by Arnold Jacobs, the legendary tubist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This was the mouthpiece Jacobs used more than any other throughout his storied career and the one he trusted most for performance, projection, and tone quality.
In the 1980s, Jacobs had two precise copies of this original mouthpiece made, both stamped "Arnold Jacobs 1." These historic pieces are now preserved in the collection of Brian Frederiksen, Jacobs’ longtime assistant and author of Arnold Jacobs: Song and Wind.
Thought to be lost in the early 1990s, the original mouthpiece resurfaced thanks to a well-known student of Jacobs who had inherited it through a remarkable chain of events. This rediscovery allowed CHI Brass to re-measure and remanufacture the exact design, bringing this iconic mouthpiece back into the hands of today’s tubists.
The CHI Brass Jacobs 1 features:
A slightly heavier weight to suit modern playing preferences while preserving the original feel and response
Standard and American shank options available to fit most tubas made after 1976
